EMG (Electromyograms)

An electromyogram (EMG) is a diagnostic test that measures the electrical activity of muscles and the nerves controlling those muscles when they are at rest and when they contract. It is used to diagnose neuromuscular disorders like muscle weakness, paralysis, and nerve compression.

EMG is beneficial for those suffering from nerve and muscular disorders as it can provide valuable insight into the underlying cause and help to guide treatment. It can also be used to assess nerve damage and muscle weakness and identify any abnormal electrical signals in the muscles. EMG is a safe and effective way to diagnose and monitor various neurological conditions and can help provide a more accurate diagnosis and better treatment outcomes.

🌟 How can EMG benefit you?

✅ Accurate Diagnosis: EMG provides valuable insights into the functioning of your muscles and nerves, enabling us to make a precise diagnosis of your condition.

✅ Personalized Treatment: Armed with comprehensive information from your EMG, we can tailor a treatment plan specifically for you, addressing the root cause and optimizing your recovery.

✅ Follow-up Monitoring: EMG is also useful for monitoring your progress during rehabilitation or treatment, ensuring we make necessary adjustments as needed.

NCS (Nerve Conduction StudIes)

A nerve conduction velocity (NCV) test — also called a nerve conduction study (NCS) measures the speed & strength of an electrical impulse as it travels through your nerves.

During the test, your nerves are stimulated, usually with electrode patches attached to your skin. Two electrodes are placed on the skin over your nerves. One electrode stimulates your nerve with a very mild electrical impulse. The other electrode records it. The resulting electrical activity is recorded by another electrode. This is repeated for each nerve being tested. The speed is then calculated by measuring the distance between electrodes and the time it takes for electrical impulses to travel between electrodes.

A related test that may be done is an electromyography (EMG). This measures the electrical activity in your muscles. It is often done at the same time as an NCV / NCS. Both tests help find the presence, location, and extent of diseases that damage the nerves and muscles.

This test provides valuable information that detects nerve damage or dysfunction. This procedure can help diagnose various conditions affecting the peripheral nervous system, such as carpal tunnel syndrome, peripheral neuropathy, nerve injuries, and more!

💡 Why should you consider a Nerve Conduction Study? If you're experiencing symptoms like numbness, tingling, weakness, or pain in your limbs, a Nerve Conduction Study can help pinpoint the underlying cause. By accurately assessing the electrical activity in your nerves, our expert physiatrists can make an accurate diagnosis and develop a tailored treatment plan to alleviate your discomfort and improve your quality of life.
